Threats and Conservation
One of the main threats of the Galapagos Islands is the growing number of incoming tourists to the islands. Any construction is limited to only 3% of the islands, but people cause pollution even in small doses. Littering and cause the deaths of many individuals that may not be extremely abundant. Another problem is the introduction of farm animals such as goats and cows. These large mammals compete for food with with countless species including tortoises and lizards. Overall the introduction of new species is one of the most detrimental things being done to the islands.
While the Islands are in some danger, there is a lot being done to prevent any more loss to species or ecosystems. Like mentioned before, construction is extremely limited on the islands and there are many places where tourists are not allowed to go. Hunting laws are very strict and any endangered animal is protected by law enforcement. There are many activist groups that help get legislation passed to protect the biodiversity and as it is right now, the islands seem to be in fairly good hands. As long as we are mindful of the delicate ecosystem of the islands, we can preserve them for future humans to study and enjoy.
